Seizure
CCMS-MED-SOP-001 §11
A 30-second seizure feels like five minutes to every witness. Use a watch. You will not sort psychogenic events in the hallway. Treat safety first.
Call 911 if: first-time; >5 minutes; second seizure without return to baseline; water, trauma, breathing difficulty, or choking; infant <6 months; pregnant; not returning toward baseline in 5–10 minutes; known diabetic; head injury today; fall off playground equipment.
Seizure timer
00:00
A 30-second seizure feels like five minutes. Use the watch.
- 1
Protect from injury. Ease to the floor. Pad the head. Move chairs, communion ware, and playground toys.
- 2
Do not restrain the limbs. Do not pry the mouth open. Do not put a wallet, spoon, or OPA in a seizing mouth.
- 3
Time it. Loosen a tight collar. After jerking stops, recovery position for secretions.
- 4
Check glucose when you can. Look for a medical alert bracelet.
- Known epilepsy, typical, <5 minutes, returns to usual self, family present: family decides on EMS, not the usher. Still check glucose. Still document. Do not send a post-ictal adult to drive.
